This poem had me thinking about regrets and I think as I have aged I no longer wish I had done things different as those thoughts are fruitless. All that we seem to have initiated in the past has not occurred in a void anyway as others have responsibility too in the choices that are made at the time. If I went back and changed a few things I wouldn't have met the love of my life or rid myself of unpleasant abusive people.

Simone, thank you so much. I do agree. But I have also found that regrets do serve a purpose. I, too, wouldn't change the past....even the negative. But I've found that regrets can help with coping with the present and maybe future. A past regret can help me make different, and hopefully better, decisions for the future.

You frequently see more with hindsight. But sadly, you can never go back. Especially when you listen to others words, instead of listening to your own eyes. Hmmm..., would I go back and change anything, your poem has me thinking. There are things I've done which I probably shouldn't have. But they are part of what I am now, and I'm very happy with who I am. So, no, I don't think I would change anything.

Hi Darlene. Thanks so much. And going back...that's what I still wonder about....going back and re-doing some things. Or at the very least, avoiding some of the really bad experiences. But you are so right, there is no way back, and it is amazing how we are defined, at least to some degree, by all our experiences. Still, there is that road not taken.

[i agree with Neela 's comment. this collection of thoughts is a bit complex for me, or maybe I should say the language could be plainer for me to understand it more readily. but I’m not trying to complain! it is probably to be considered (by many readers) much more poetic than mine, as I depend, in my ‘poems’, primarily on rhyming and some semblance of rhythm to allow me to call mine poems! I do like this. see if my translation comes close enough: “Others (or maybe just myself) have talked me (until recently) into believing my past was good enough OR that it might be worse if I tried to live it over again. Now, older, I am [every day? ] realizing that every day [? ] in my past was not the way I would have wished it to be. I now am having some regrets, and assigning some fault for what took place. ‘Hindsight is 20-20’.“ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - di•gres•sion ………….hmm? ˌdīˈɡreSH(ə) n/ noun noun: digression; plural noun: digressions 1. a temporary departure from the main subject in speech or writing. let's return to the main topic after that brief digression synonyms: deviation, detour, diversion, departure, divergence, excursus; aside, incidental remark a book full of long digressions re•gret ******* (I DO allow synonyms to be used together in poetry! bri :) heh heh) rəˈɡret/ verb verb: regret; 3rd person present: regrets; past tense: regretted; past participle: regretted; gerund or present participle: regretting 1. 1. feel sad, repentant, or disappointed over (something that has happened or been done, especially a loss or missed opportunity) . she immediately regretted her words synonyms: be sorry about, feel contrite about, feel remorse about/for, be remorseful about, rue, repent (of) , feel repentant about, be regretful at/about More they came to regret their decision mourn, grieve for/over, feel grief at, weep over, sigh over, feel sad about, lament, sorrow for, deplore regretting the passing of youth antonyms: welcome, applaud o used in polite formulas to express apology for or sadness over something unfortunate or unpleasant. any inconvenience to readers is regretted o archaic feel sorrow for the loss or absence of (something pleasant) . my home, when shall I cease to regret you! noun noun: regret; plural noun: regrets 1. 1. a feeling of sadness, repentance, or disappointment over something that has happened or been done. she expressed her regret at Virginia's death synonyms: *******remorse, sorrow, contrition, contriteness, repentance, penitence, guilt, compunction, remorsefulness, ruefulness both players later expressed regret sadness, sorrow, disappointment, unhappiness, grief they left with genuine regret antonyms: satisfaction, happiness o an instance or cause of regret. she had few regrets in leaving the house o used in polite formulas to express apology for or sadness at an occurrence or an inability to accept an invitation. plural noun: one's regrets please give your grandmother my regrets synonyms: apology, apologies; refusal please give your grandmother my regrets Origin - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I shall gladly place this poem into my/our September showcase for PH poets, to be found in my poems section on my PH site. thanks. :) bri
