This is so intense and cumulative it has to be read more than once. I sense a two-fold quality First, there is the mystic experience itself - the searching for God, preparing oneself to receive his visitation, expressing gratitude. All of these things happen in the present tense of the poem. Second, the poem gives an over view practice of belief and practice. But this is a private experience. I noticed it happened OUTSIDE IN BACK OF THE CHURCH: it's still sacred ground but not part of a service with other worshipers. YOU prayed to God to manifest himself and he complied in appearing to you alone. This was a mystical experience, one-on-one in the divine presence, a unique blessing. No doubt the consequence of the passionate commitment of your prayer.
