Empty Car Poem by Kelly Boutin

Empty Car

I'm an empty car
driving down the street
of a lonely city
where everyone's asleep.

I drive onto the highway
it's all glazed with rain
this late at night
everything looks that way.

We share a connection,
those streetlights are my hope
I'll stay awake all night
to watch them flicker out.

Strangely I can feel
this night understands me
it knows what's locked inside,
the things too hard to say.

The night is so still,
it's so quiet out here,
but the tension of the yesterdays
still linger in the air.

The night is made for peace,
every day's a struggle,
I need a place to go,
I can't take this struggle.

I just drive down the highway,
I'm an empty car,
trying to fill in the pieces
of my empty heart.
