Shame on me? Peshaw. Everything °you° wrote above leads the read down that road. The foreword, the afterword and the inclusion of the word °promiscuously°. If you intended your metaphor to lead elsewhere you did a wonderful job to camouflage it. It is clear from your comments that even you recognize the most obvious interpretation here.
