Each New Year's Promises Poem by Patricia Denise Newman

Each New Year's Promises

We welcome in each New year with promises and good cheer
But all around us, conflict, war and poverty still hold fear
We wish for peace and harmony, with tolerance for all
But greed and long held bitterness hold such dreams in pall
The lessons of the past, forgotten now it seems
As the intent of those who lead us overrule these simpler schemes
The birthplace of Christianity is once more at war
And Ukrainians still fight Russia, just as they did before
Floods, conflagration and famine rise up around our world
Our planet is now dying, Nature's anger is unfurled
Should we not find an answer to all these cares and woes
By promises to do better and make peace with our foes?
Can't we all work together to improve our Native land
And live once more in harmony, extending friendship's hand?
We welcome each New Year with promises, it's time to keep a few
To make this world a better place, fit for me and you.
