note well (the s at end of 'nine') : 'If someone is dressed to the nines or is dressed up to the nines, they are wearing very smart or glamorous clothes.'
I mean 'Men' in the sense of mankind Bri (which includes women) ! Also in a hint of humility, the poem suggests that all is vanity if God does not exist. Our poems are merely waves that break on a transient shore.
