The marbled steps of a lullaby pool
sound like cars out on the street
beneath the light of a gibbon's moon
willow leaves dance in peace
on a hood of Lightning Blue
hearts soar like lorikeets
as the evening flowers bloom;
sweet Southern melodies
in mulberry dew.
Three figure dance in a barn
one of them isn't real
but still he smiles down in their arms
as hay settles on a Wrangler wheel
inside all snuggly warm
a baby wrapped tangerine peels
cheeps softly in the dark
between the two
The ‘Thunder' roars like a mountain lion
in the maraschino rain
the truck drives over a waterfall
as the world goes insane.
Riding on a falling raindrop
they try to lose their pain
as their baby sleeps like a little fawn
and all the critters keep him safe
inside a velvet U-haul.
Thousands of tiny droplets glisten
as they rest in a clover field.
Sinking into a raspberry sunset
the pink and parakeet hues
break out of their cloudy prison
to help the two of them heal.
Sung to sleep by a baby cricket,
their world turns surreal
with gentle twilight kisses.
Trees shelter a bejeweled lake
and guard its safety haven.
Sleeping together in the shade
on the huge truck bed
the two nest around their baby
wrapping him in protection.
The shore's a beautiful place
until the water calls them in
and the two of them swim away.
There sits a little dogwood cabin
full of blossom sweetness
looking out upon a mountain
in the early morning mist.
It waits and watches for the cold wind
to bring the birds back to their nest
whose souls ran away and hid
high above happiness
they'll come home again.
