Diwali 2018 Poem by Madathil Rajendran Nair

Diwali 2018

Rating: 5.0

They stole the splendor
They stole the thunder
They stole the sparkle
In our kids' gleaming smile

Men somewhere in a city of the north
Which we call our capital
Balding both inside and outside
With overflowing wisdom
About constitutional rights
Are dictating terms
What should sparkle
And who should smile

A city perennially doomed
To live choked in smoke
Due to clouds created
Elsewhere by burning
Trash, grass and plastic
Unchecked automobiles
God knows what other abominable shit
With a populace that doesn't have
Proper toilets to ease
Is dictating terms
On our innocent kids' dreams
Just on a single day of the year

This Diwali down South
Where kids usually frolic in mirth
Has been unusually silent this year
For fear; is it fear that we want?
Let the sparklers light the smile
Of our innocent kids
Let daisy-wheels and crackers
Abound the din of their dreams

Diwali can't be made green
Even if aliens all green
Descend on us from Mars
Or whatever other alien source

We are earthlings
May we have recourse to the little things
That make our day
Without let up, without stay
Happy Diwali let us all say
Environment can wait another one day

Our president has undone many of the environmental regulations here to 'help the economy'. Greed and stupidity will leave our grandchildren with an inhospitable world.

Thanks Kelly for your comment. Your man doesn't even acknowledge the existence of global warming. That is a serious case. The Indian situation is that we have wrong priorities and pay lip service to real environment protection.
