Well, there are 33 of them in Hinduism, Islam and Christianity have one each, and I don't think Budhism talk about any God whatsoever... But as far as my understanding of theology is concerned Organised religion has misinterpreted the 'holy texts' to suit their means for eons and will continue to manipulate humans forever...
As an atheist, I find no connection with any deity whatsoever, but always belief that faith in ourselves is faith in God, and that spirituality is different from religion..
Another well penned poem Bakuli that talks about a complicated issue without taking sides and without judgement.. Wonderful work...
Hey Souren, thanks for burnishing my knowledge of theology! But as i heard it’s 330 million goddesses and gods in Hinduism. If I’m not wrong it’s mentioned in Yajurveda. Besides these deities they worship many Babas and Swamis. In each community you’ll find one such guru or baba or swami. So, I said it’s countless. However, I agree when we say our holy books are misinterpreted and so this whole concept may be…! ? I’m not sure!
But for sure I knew I need to work more on this poem and my knowledge of theology.
Thank you so much! Please keep commenting …
['They are their powers (330 millions): there are just thirty-three gods'
......
'The eight Vasus, the eleven Rudras, and twelve Adityas make thirty-one: Indra and Prajapati make thirty-three']
Yajnavalka [Brhadaranyaka Upanishad. Penguin Classics Upanishads, pg 63]
Yes, as you said 330 million is the 'powers' that these deities have not their numbers, which is 33 only. This is disputed but in the named Upanishad, which is one of the thirteen 'official' Upanishads, Yajnavalka makes it clear..
As a man who had read enough theology to be turned into an atheist I attest this :)
The problem is that there are multiple versions and interpretations of these texts and one cannot really take them 'literally'.. Which, unfortunately, has been done for ages to horrible effect... A fine poem again Bakuli, as I have always told you, you have the incredible strength to take 'complicated' issues and write amazing poems on them without taking sides.. That is wonderful :)
