Devi Worship During Nine Days Of Navaratri Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Devi Worship During Nine Days Of Navaratri

Rating: 5.0

Markandeya with great humility enquires of Lord Brahma:
"O Great Father of this world!
What is the great secret by
Which the world is protected and safeguarded?
This secret, so far, remains unrevealed to anyone! "

Lord Brahma answers: "O learned Sage!
There is one great secret which is sacred and auspicious,
Of great value and great protection to all beings of this world.
O wise one! Do listen! "
The armour of protection is Goddess Durga -
The resplendent One!

The fabulous Goddess Durga
Manifests in nine different forms.They are;
Shailaputri,
Brahmacharini,
Chandragandha,
Kushmanda,
Skandamata,
Katyayini,
Kalaratri,
Mahagauri,
Siddhidhatri.

"O Durge! Your devotees have no grief or sufferings
Nor any fear or anguish!
Your arm around them is a protection -
Armour that can ward off any evil.
Whether in war or in the midst of a raging fire,
Whether terrified during the onslaught of the enemies,
No matter, whatever the circumstances,
No misfortune can fall on those who surrender to you."

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
An Extract from my book ‘Devi Mahatmyam' from the Chapter Devi Kavacham - the Armour of Goddess.
In India, special prayers are offered during the annual festival of Navaratri in the months of September - October. ‘Navaratri' means nine days.
Out of the nine days of its observance, the first three days are reserved for Goddess Durga, the next three days for Goddess Lakshmi and the last three days for the Goddess Sarasvati.

Devi showers her blessings to those who chant her name with devotion.

Wealth of wisdom lies buried in our ancient texts. Most people have time nor aptitude for it, such translations go a long way to put them before larger audience/readership. Great work.

The Supreme power, as per Hindu belief, lies with Goddess. By whatever name you call Her. She is worshipped in the form of Saraswathy, the Goddess of Vidya, art and literature. In the form of Goddess Lakshmy by those who suffer from poverty, as she is Goddess of wealth. Goddess Durga is the Goddess of Power, health and beauty. While Lord Vishnu is Narayana, Devi is Narayanee.

(2) I would like to chant a few words in line with the spirit of the season: या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्ति-रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥ जो देवी सब प्राणियों में शक्ति रूप में स्थित हैं, उनको नमस्कार, नमस्कार, बारंबार नमस्कार है।

Amazing poem. This, along with the Poet's Notes, brings to fore the nine forms of Goddess Durga which are worshipped by devotees during Shardiya Navaratri Festivals to seek Her blessings and benevolence. Thanks, Geeta ji, for sharing this devotional poem on this auspicious festive occasion.
