Declaration? Poem by B. V. Dahlen

Declaration?

Bobby wrote my name up high
On the wall for all to view.

It looks like red nail polish
Indelible and new.

His initials do not join my name.
Does it mean he cares for me?

Is it like a wanted poster,
Or a beat-me-up decree?

Do I need to watch behind me
When I play along the block?

If it was just a warning
Would he have just used chalk?

There is no heart around it.
Does it mean he likes me lots?

He kinda’ held my hand that time
We made those b ball shots,

Or when he washed my face with snow
Going back to school at lunch.

I got up sputtering and threw
A well connected punch.

When he could catch his breath he smiled
As if he could admire

A girl who didn’t wail and pout.
I never was a crier.

I guess I’ll have to wait and see
How Bobby acts next time,

But I won’t keep my fingers crossed
'Cause mostly guys are slime.
