In the Buddhist world view, you can actually accrue merit by being happy for others' well being. You are sad for their lack of well-being and emotional health, so it is logical that merit would be accrued that way as well.

I consider what you've written to be some kind of secular prayer.

Well you put it into a poem, and you captured that mixture of helplessness, outrage, and hope for the mental wholesomeness of your fellow human beings. That poem will be read by some whose attitudes are teetering on a fence, and it will affect them.
