Her name was soft her color white
But to a child of five what mattered most
Was her sweet taste
And so my friend she was, or so I thought.

For in my hand I played with this new friend, He would break apart and magically retract. Granny said to swallow him down my throat To help my belly-ache, or so she thought. sugar and mercury. a very fine poem. tony
Thanks Tony, for taking the time to visit and comment. Best to you this year 2020.
Oh! Nice unexpected ending. interesting poem Luz.. All that shines are not gold. Nor all that tastes sweet are sugar either. Liked a lot 10/10
allegorical touching in- my best friend's names were Sugar and Mercury. //
deadly friends robbed the health but still the best friendship bridge existed with Sugar and Mercury// interesting
Something having a silver color and sweet taste that was given to a child to swallow by her granny? It.has a faint unusual taste and it helped to recover from belly-ache. Many such things were given to the grandchildren in various diseases by the grandparents that helped them a lot. Now modern medication has taken their place and we have forgotten those friendly house made medicines. A nice recollection of grandparents' care for their grandchildren.
Yes, it is called 'folk medicine'. I got sicker my system reacted to the poison by getting rashes, and my eyes hands and lips would swell up. Mercury is toxic and some people died from this. I was pretty blessed not to die. Thank you for reading.
My deadly friends robbed me of my health, Some even say that I'm lucky to be alive For you see, my best friend's names were Sugar and Mercury.... very beautiful

Thank you for reading and commenting. It's a true story, when I was a child living with my grandmother in Mexico. I got very sick and she never knew it was from the mercury and she gave me other things trying to cure me. Thank God I didn't die.
An insightful piece of poetry, elegantly brought forth in good diction with conviction. A lovely poem indeed. Thanks for sharing Luz.
Surely such people are there with us. But how nicely, you exposed the vices of a human nature in a sweet, cultured way. I love it.
Very well written, the pacing is brilliant! It reminded me to be weary of whom I call friend. Almost a cationary tale, a very beatifully crafted poem in any case!
Wonderful poem and it was concluded with the solid answer. Not every sweet, shinning and tasty items are meant no harm to us; it could be deadly as written in this poem. Excellent! ! !
Nicely written, you paint a picture with your words. It gave cause to think. The flow was nicely put.10
