D-Day 6th June 1944 Poem by Patricia Denise Newman

D-Day 6th June 1944

The sound of aircraft loomed overhead
wing tips glinting in the early light of dawn
Wave after wave they drone above
carrying their fearful load of bombs
Below them on the darkened sea
ships and craft of various size sail forward
onward to their deadly mission
Men and boys, not yet full grown,
line the ships heading towards the beaches
to a fateful day that will live in history
So many lives lost, so many hopes shattered
a day of horror and death
This then was the beginning of the fight
lifting the lock of terror
freeing the downtrodden and re-establishing democracy
A long fight lay ahead but they were willing
to give their lives for freedom

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this whilst watching the 80th anniversary of D-Day 2024. The pictures on the television wrote the poem for me.
