Day Poem by Ray Hansell

Day

I told you about the "People of The Night"
Now let's look at the day
Believe me when I tell you
They to are on display

You've got panhandlers in front of stores
Asking for change or more

There's so much traffic speeding by
They pass you in the blink of an eye

The addicts are all coming down
Some of them sprawled on the ground

Some have needles at their sides
Things the daylight can't hide

A couple of hookers heading home
Today they'll sleep, tonight again they roam

UPS, Fed Ex and the Postal Service
In some neighborhoods they're nervous

To get all packages and letters in the mail
To all recipients without fail

Garbage trucks block city streets
Just try to keep the whole town neat

Police cars pass with lights and sirens on
Will the suspects get caught or be gone?

Stores open for business everywhere
People move about without care

Armed security guards at the bank
Are his bullets real or are they blanks?

For his sake I hope it's a quiet day
So nothing harmful flies his way

The homeless in the park and drinking
Lower and lower life has them sinking

The city lives in the day
Soon the night will have it's say

A different cast will soon descend
As daylight comes to its end
