Oh Gently, gently, driverman!
He's got a knife pinned to his back
To the lake side near the dark cave
Oh Softly, softly, driverman!
Would you drive his friend too?
She knows where the gold is.
Gently, gently help him Driver man
He's got to wash his bleeding
He's got to build a small cabin on the sea.
He's got to leave a grave there
For his path is crossed, his trust is crushed
He'd been dancing with a stranger.
With a shinning chain tied to her two legs
One is for him -- the other for her father
Who tell her to tell lies and later kill him.
That will give her seventy-two husbands
And a golden crown in heaven above
She's got to do nothing to loose that religion.
Her father gon' jump a gun to stop her do it
He's got to do nothing to loose her lady
He will be lonely for all of his days.
He will be turning all the cards alone.
Wishing he could join what tear them apart
Cus he needs a love but that of a stranger.
