I found this interesting tidbit about Harriet Monroe over at http: //allpoetry.com/Harriet-Monroe - - - - - Founder of Poetry magazine in 1912, she began the call for what she deemed poems of modern significance. The journal contributed to the start of the Chicago Renaissance and also supported moderism's international influence and appeal. Monroe kept a vigilant watch for new talents and published, among others, T.S. Eliot, Carl Sandburg, and Ezra Pound in the first editions of Poetry. Her personal work, initially, was influenced by the classical constructs of the nineteenth century, but evolved along with the modernist movement's own growth pattern.
