Portraits of single individuals are relatively rare in poetry and this is one of the best. What I particularly like about this poem is the way that Lawson, who despite his unschooled style was a master of poetic form, uses the difference between the 'long 'and the 'short' lines to create tonal differences. Read the poem aloud and you'll see what I mean.
