Daily Bread Poem by Yvonne Rautenbach

Daily Bread

St Leonards is a walk in the park
Rustling trees preside
Red walls, grey walls, post in a box walls
Creepers drape and glide
St Leonards houses make their mark
Drives mouthlike and wide
Gangly terraces, railings rusted
Dustbins to the side

St Leonards is like daily bread
Smiling ramblers trot
Runners puff, the cyclists whoosh
And dodge the drains of rot
St Leonards lamps are set to keel
While brand new chargers hum
Round the corner Magdalene
And bakers for a sum

St Leonards lined with folk and taste
Organic and sedate
Fires, agas, pumpkins, pies
And meals we cant berate
St Leonards lends a healthy ear
To all that saves the earth
Buy your bread at Magdalene
And cakes to swell your girth
