Such a beautiful poem. I know the English translation but it is miles better in his own language because of the word play eg rain and cry, which don't work so cleverly in English! I did this for A level French in 1977 and have loved it since. I always thought he was gay and that it was a very brave poem for that time but I believe he was straight and merely writing from the perspective of the woman.

Thank you, Sasha Julia, for the translation below. French is a language with which I am not very familiar. Even though Poem Hunter is based in Paris, this is the first time I can remember a Poem of the day being presented in a language other than English. May I suggest that they should have different sections you could click on; one if you wanted poems in English, another for Spanish, etc.

Just a translation for you guys, if you want it. It doesn't sound as good in English as it does in French: His put the coffee In the cup He put milk In the cup with the coffee He put the sugar In the café au lait, With the little spoon He stirred it He drank the café au lait And he returned the cup Without talking Hit lit One cigarette He made rings With the smoke He put the ashes In the ashtray Without talking Without a look He got up He put His hat on his head He put on His raincoat Because it was raining And he left In the rain Without a word Without a look And me, I put My head in my hands And I cried
