Powerful stuff, I really liked these lines, She smiles Mistaking his sorrow for contentment He sees lost horizons in her smile Love that never speaks Seeing how hard it is for us to understand another person, to get through the mistaken meanings.

This is a very moving vignette that sums up such a lot of marriages and relationships that have changed their nature and become ambiguous for one partner yet not lost intensity for either. You have beautifully summoned up the quiet room, the crackling fire, and the suggestion of change to come for the dog is particularly subtle. Your choice of words and changes of rhythm are masterful.
