Culture Clash Poem by Mary Champion

Culture Clash

There are plebs in the pub
discussing the latest in Corrie.
So earnest!
So engaged!
You'd think it was real life.
So I smile my superior smile.
I would never demean myself.

There are chavs on the train
reading soap scandals in the tabloids.
So earnest!
So engaged!
You'd think it was real life.
Smugly I congratulate myself.
I only read the Guardian.

There are toffs on TV.
discussing the works of Jane Austin.
So earnest!
So engaged!
You'd think it was real life.
And I think to myself -
what's the difference?
