Crossroads Poem by Sydney L

Crossroads

Rating: 4.7

I come when I am summoned
By the people of Above
From my home beneath all else
Where no souls know no love
They summon me from greed
They summon me for wealth
The only time they need me
Is so they can help themselves
Jerry wanted money
To free him from his debt
I gave it to him willingly
I knew what I'd collect
The week before was Susan
Who wanted to be loved
In my opinion I think
She should be asking Up Above
But who am I to judge
Who comes looking for my home
They know where to find me
In my humble crossroads
Michael wanted fame
What kind he didn't say
So I made him very ambitious
That way he could seize his day
I'm so very tired
Of all these selfish requests
If I were replaced
I'd readily accept
But then there came a girl
No more than five or six
'I read of what to do, ' she said
'If I ever had a wish'
'I'll grant you anything, ' said I
My black eyes looking down
'But if I do just know
You'll spend forever Underground'
She nodded very slowly
And showed me her hands
'This is my fish Sprinkles' said she
'He's the bravest fish in all the lands! '
My coal eyes were disbelieving
For in her hands she held
A very tiny and also very dead goldfish
Judging from the smell
'He was going to save his love' she cried
Blinking away her tears
I didn't know how to handle this
I'd never seen this in all my years
'You want me to save your fish? ' I asked
As she dried her tear-stained cheeks
I could barely hear her voice
When she softly whispered 'please'
I took the fish from her
And I brought it back to life
I made him a fishbowl
And she grinned with great delight
I gave her back her fish
She looked at me and said
'I guess you own my soul now, right? '
I laughed and shook my head
'This I'll do for free
Nothing shall be owed
Just make sure you visit
My humble little crossroad'
She smiled at me then
As if I'd somehow made her day
I could hear her small voice singing
As she happily skipped away
I watched her disappear
Down the lonely dirt road
I laughed and yelled 'I saved a fish!
I, the Demon of the Crossroads! '

Very interesting poem. But did the goldfish appreciate being resurrected, I wonder?
