Countess Ii Poem by Bill Grace

Countess Ii

I blundered upon her in a store in Germany
she did not bestow a word on me
nor even an acknowledging glance.
She was something quite alive but from a different age
the way she dressed
the way she held her head
her self contained expression it all said:
'I am above the human race.
I do not need an American peasant.'
It was another great piece of education
for an Upstate - Freeville, New York boy.
