I remembered that the 'State of emergency' was the mildest imposition that England, Germany and Occupied Europe had to undergo for six years 1939-45 - the irony of war, that aggressor, victim, and liberator all have to put themselves under the same deprivations of speech and freedom. Also the memory of Germany's slide from proud nationalism to degradation.
