Coincidence Poem by Cigeng Zhang

Coincidence

Rating: 5.0

You send me a big bunch of calla lilies
Redolent and tender, tied with silk bows
I hold the flowers, as if my Valentine came
My memories go back to the long-gone days

The first gift I received on the Valentine's Day
was a bunch of calla lilies tied with yellow bows
The boy next door wasn't my lover but willing to become
So dared to send me the calla lilies not roses

Calla Lillies with yellow bows- a hesitant but hopeful boy looking for your affection. I like the parsity of your prose and your narrative too. Thanks for sharing.

I love the perception of coincidences: it means you are paying attention to things around you and are alert to their connections, and such alertness is essentially poetic. Your poem proves my point because you take two events separated by time which are linked by the beauty of lilies but even more linked by your tender emotions. And tenderness is the key word here: that's the impression I am left with - your tender appreciation of lilies, memory, a sweet-tempered boy in the past and perhaps in the present too, and you yourself at the center of it all. This poem deserves that wonderful word A LYRIC POEM.

Hi Cigeng, Fantastic write. Best one on the Valentines Day. Your poem took me back many many years. In our childhood, we were not aware of Valentines Day. So no celebrations. But, in reply to a present of a red rose, I received a kiss on my cheek from my valentine. I still cherish that kiss.... Thank you Cigeng for rekindling my sweet memories. A very very sweet ten...
