You are deeply troubled by the nature of modern things. But your reaction doesn't take into account the good people who are also in government. You meet these people in a municipal building, or a government office, or a courthouse. There are many of them, and they are really us. We have to remember in the midst of our genuine discontent these good people. My niece is one of them: She works in monitoring the quality of our drinking water, how crucial and necessary that is. Her salary is paid by taxes and what a worthy expense that is! ! Why not celebrate those worthy people who keep our democracy alive and well instead of just attacking the scoundrels who make THEIR profit or THEIR warped view of the world community lead to wasteful spending. Let's switch from ranting against the bad guys to cheering for the good guys! ! They are all around us, keeping our communities alive and preparing the future for our children. And they don't boast or call attention to themselves. Remember how Walt Whitman wrote poems about the vast mass of workers doing their share of good? Who CELELBRATES that dimension of our society? ?
