Cinnamon Toast,1948 Poem by Cowboy Ron Williams

Cinnamon Toast,1948

Rating: 5.0

I don't know if toasters
had been invented yet,
but we didn't have one.

We made toast in the oven.

Put butter on a slice
of Mama's home-made bread,
sprinkle on cinnamon and sugar
and stick it in the oven.

We had to watch it closely
so that it would not burn.

When the butter, sugar and
cinnamon all start to boil
together, it is almost ready.

Crispy on top and soft
on the bottom, it was a delicious,
small child's delightful treat.

Cinnamon Toast,1948
POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
A fond childhood memory. Thinking about it, I made some today the same way. It was pretty good, but without Mama's home-made bread, it could never be the same.

Childhood memories long last in our life--even a small flower, a blade of grass, a berry and many common things with which we were associated in childhood give nostalgic feelings.

Charles Strite invented the pop-up toaster in 1921, or 1919, according to one source.  I don't think we had one as early as 1948 either.

The first electric toaster was invented in 1893 by Alan MacMasters in Scotland. He called the device the "Eclipse Toaster, " and it was manufactured and marketed by the Crompton Company. It would only toast bread on one side at a time and had to be watched so the toast would not burn.
