Christmas Candles Poem by William Kofoed

Christmas Candles

Rating: 5.0

In frigid grip of winter cold
and oppressing darkness of the night
thunder sounds as armies clash
candles yet flicker bright

Tyrants in their power seek
to distract from problems wrong
turn the people to thoughts of war
in the hope they'll then unite

gather rally to his cause
and his banner will they raise
and forget their dismay
from their lives of day to day

they cannot see nor do they hear
of the war so far away
just his words do they hear
as he proclaims his righteous war

long ago an Army crushed
distant people in their lands
to seize their freedoms and the joy
and proclaims their tyrants name

yet their spirit could not be crushed
nor their hope be seized away
while their breath they did draw
they did resist with their might

in dark of night or winter cold
far from the palaces where tyrants reign
spirit cannot be crushed away
as flickers still candles bright

It's what's happening in Ukraine now, and Yemen, and many other places.
