You have captured the brutality of this custom very well. The plight of a small girl who goes through this is felt strongly by the reader. A powerful write, giving voice to the voiceless. Full marks.

Thank you Nosheen.. We are 'apparently' living in the 21st century, and still we have sheer barbarism, violence, crimes, repression, subjugation of women. If there is anything that makes me feel agonised it is the state of women in present day world.. We need more equality amongst the sexes. These sorts of barbarity and cruelty is absolutely unacceptable.. NOT AT ALL.. Thank you for reading.

Only women can understand the pain of Genital Mutilation, I congratulate you, It is indeed a bold decision to bring this issue and condemn openly. Such courageous act is very much required specially by the kind-hearted poets, it is time to show the mirror to the society which in the name of all big banner do such unethical and inhumane acts.100++++

Thank you Asim.. These kinds of barbarism cannot take place in a civilised society.. This is barbarism.. 'Khatna' is absolutely inhumanic, and against basic human rights.. A big NO to this.. I hope the governments of all the 29 odd countries where this is practised will make it illegal

It is just unfortunate that Poemhunter won't allow me keep the weblinks of the sources of my 'notes'.. I can't put the change org petition here either... Please use google to search them out.. There is one thing to spam, and another thing to offer sources of important notes... I am disheartened by this umbrella scraping....

On FGM (continued) 'Recent estimates indicate that around 90% of cases include clitoridectomy, excision or cases where girls’ genitals are “nicked” but no flesh removed (Type IV) , and about 10% are infibulations (WHO) .' Source: endfgm website..

'Female genital mutilation (FGM) includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The procedure has no health benefits for girls and women. Procedures can cause severe bleeding and problems urinating, and later cysts, infections, as well as complications in childbirth and increased risk of newborn deaths. More than 125 million girls and women alive today have been cut in the 29 countries in Africa and Middle East where FGM is concentrated (1) . FGM is mostly carried out on young girls sometime between infancy and age 15. FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women. Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice is mostly carried out by traditional circumcisers, who often play other central roles in communities, such as attending childbirths. In many settings, heath care providers perform FGM due to the erroneous belief that the procedure is safer when medicalized. (1) However, WHO strongly urges health professionals not to perform such procedures. FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women. It is nearly always carried out on minors and is a violation of the rights of children. The practice also violates a person's rights to health, security and physical integrity, the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the right to life when the procedure results in death.' Barbaric practice should be banned, since ages women has been suppressed in the name of religion, society and what not... Hats off for bringing in to light of this age old practice. While reading I felt the goosebumps being a woman I respect other women's right to live with dignity. My compliments Soren..Keep writing and keep sharing.100++++++

Thank you Arzoo.. As a human being with a little conscience, I find myself in extreme pain when I hear, read, or SEE WITH MY OWN EYES, how women are treated in the society.. We cannot justify any of this - this violence, hatred, oppression, and brutality that is carried out against women in the name of Religion, social norms, or whatever... I will raise my voice, and keep raising it until I will go mute.. There is no room for discrimination in a civilised society.. We should then call ourselves barbarians and go back to caves, or change the world.. Equality between the genders in all spheres.. That is the world I dream of..

This is barbaric and brutal.......! Since ages, the world has never been sensitive to the problems of women. Female body has been abused and mutilated under one guise or the other. You have brought forth a satanic and savage practice to alert the conscience of thinking people which no body would dare mention as talking about female genitals is often seen as a taboo! I congratulate you for this bold step!

Thank you Valsa ma'am.. As a citizen of this country I believe I cannot remain silent on issues that concern me.. We have got this attitude of 'hiding' our dark sides.. This attempt from me, if it helps to start a discourse on this issue will be successful.. Even if one person finds their conscience stirred by this, I will be more than happy.. We need to talk about atrocities against women.. It breaks my heart to see one half of the population supressed, tormented, tortured, and brutalised for only their gentials! ! NO TO THIS.. Let's hope for a society that won't tolerate misogyny and oppression of women...

A survivor's account: “When I was around seven, my grandmother took me on an outing. We went to a dingy building. The women there told me to take my panties off. Then all the women, including my grandmother, pinned my arms and legs down. One of the women took a blade and began cutting me down there. I screamed in terror and pain.” Words of Tasleem khatnakhatamkaro on whose experience this poem is based on...

You've once again blessed us with your talent for bringing light to a topic most would rather sweep under the rug and not think of. A powerful poem. Painful (by design I believe) to read, but speaks of an all too prevalent evil among particular cultures. To speak the unspeakable, this is one of Souren's gifts

Thanks Mike.. I am a little sorry about not replying to your comments on my 'Dedication' series.. Those poems are a too emotional hassle for me to speak about now... As far as this one is concerned, I just recently read an account of a woman, now about 50, who had gone through this when she was just seven.. It is barely imaginable to live in a world where kids have to suffer through this.. For what? ? Dumb religious beliefs? ? It doesn't make any sense to me.. I was horrified to read her account of it.. I was scared, terrified, I cried, and then became angry.. We need to have a discourse on this.. We need to stop throwing things that we feel are 'uncomfortable' under the carpet... Not worth it.. Voices must be raised, and such practices must go away.. We cannot take things like these at all..

Another of the patriarchal abominations of religion. I am convinced that the better part of many religions was invented by men just to keep women subservient. A personal hero of mine is Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

It's all like that Kelly.. I was left speechless when I heard this kind of thing is done to little kids.. This is just abuse, nothing but pure abuse.. A violation of human rights.. But Religion barely cared about it.. We would have still had slavery had 'Religious Laws' been around..
