Chess Poem 06: The Eternal Game?

Rating: 5.0

A friend of mine just passed away
and so it made me stop and think:
How long the wait until the day
when I too must become extinct?

I will not hurry the time, no doubt,
for that is the coward's way out,
but when God calls and says it's time
I will begin my upward climb.

Or just perhaps it may well be
that someone else will beckon me.
I will relax and take it slow
if I must travel down below.

We had one thing in common, we
both loved the game of chess, you see.
Is there a chance it will prevail
on the other side of the veil?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem is dedicated to Robert Farrell Sorenson, who I just learned passed away on September 8,2014, in Annabella, Utah, USA.The poem just came out, line upon line.It was written in maybe ten minutes. His funeral is actually today, Saturday, Sept.13,2014, but I am thousands of miles away in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, and cannot attend so I wrote this poem in his memory instead.Until we meet again, Robert, and don't forget to study the Ruy Lopez and the Fried Liver Attack! Note: 24 December 2014This poem was originally called ETERNAL GAME? and was deleted and resubmitted with this title because Poem Hunter added voice to it against my wishes.26 September 2016: Title was changed again so that this poem may be found together with my other chess poems
