Change can be good if there is a valid reason, but was there in this case?

Absolutely Rajnish ji! I too, do not understand the logic of changing names of places, stations and roads. Bombay changed to Mumbai, Calcutta changed to Kolkata, Madras changed to Chennai......so on. Just by changing names what do we achieve? Our perception does not change at all. What a pity! .......10

Your comments made me read all the comments received about this poem once again. It was so delightfully amusing. I agree with your observations- in toto. These things are totally specious. Thanks, Geeta ji.

I agree with you about changing place names. My own city, Wanganui, was changed needlessly to 'Whanganui', which is actually worse. Do not change place names unless absolutely necessary.

So, it is not confined to one place or a country. But these are all political gimmicks, more or less.

When the road indicator with name 'Guru Virjanand Marg' was fixed recently in my locality in Delhi where I have already lived for about 35 years, I was intrigued as I had never heard of this Guru. On googling about him, I found that he was a blind sage of Mathura and only known as the celebrated teacher of Swami Dayanand Saraswati who founded the Arya Samaj.

Indeed, the name changing spree seems to be far too rampant these days. Race Course Metro station has been re-named as Lok Kalyan Marg Metro Station. In a joke shared on Whatsapp, a man went to a restaurant and asked for Mughal parantha. The waiter told him that it is now know as 'Deen Dayal Upadhyay' parantha!

Changing of names or renaming a place won't change the behavior of its people or its culture and identity. A nice poem indeed. Your composition is so sweet.

The name Calcutta was first used by Job Charnock, who was sent there as representative of British East India Company. He was instrumental in setting up their base in Bengal. Later, it was Lord Clive who defeated Nawab Siraj-ud-daula in battle of Plassey in 1757. This became the turning point for British Rule in India.

Yes, what you said about rose is correct because rose has a different name in different language without any change in its fragrance. But, does it have a different name or names in English language. Even if it gets a new name, how will it get currency or acceptance? Take the case of Indian Ocean. If there is a proposal to change its name at some International Forum since it does not belong to India but to the world as a whole, will it be acceptable to these name-changers? No.

It’s official. The iconic, historic Mughalsarai railway station, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, is now Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction, after the RSS pracharak who was mysteriously found dead at this station in 1968. (cont.)

Yes, I was intrigued by the change from 'Calcutta' to 'Kolkota'. You express the name change in packed, concise words, which give an overall impression of elegance and wit 'Nothing has changed with this change'. I think that you are making real progress in technique.
