Rating: 4.7

With head bent low he watches her go,
bravely facing a world she does not know
He smiles goodbye and covers up his tears
for he must be brave if she looks back in fear.

I remember this experience with my own. It was heartwrenching for parent and child. Memories again flooding back. Beautiful writing.

A touching moment well captured! Every father will be able to relate to this. Not father's in last line? Well done!

Touching....all fathers can relate to the to the moment you've captured here. You might want to execute and add the missing apostrophe in father's. Thanks for you input on Drift Up and A realization revisited. Much appreciated.

'The first of many firsts for her and he knows the pain of each step will remain. Her first day of school is her first step away from the safe harbour of a father s love Usually a mother's love is conspicuous, father's is not. Thanks to the poet for seeing her father's love and appreciating it.

A poem reflecting the feelings of a loving father who waves goodbye to his daughter on her first day to school and who knows that.... ' Her first day of school is her first step away from the safe harbour of a father s love' Very poignantly expressed! Enjoyed much!

he knows the pain of each step will remain. is it his pain which pains him? come on dad! grow up! ! and go back to doing the dishes and vacuuming. i guess my mom was ready and willing to send her fourth one off; or maybe i just didn't look back and notice her tears. i was anxious to get to school and check out all the babes. thanks for sharing with us noreen. and thanks for the rhyming and not feeling you needed a rhyme with every line. sometimes i find a poet trying for a rhyme when it just doesn't work for me and i'd rather that they not try. the first day of school! what an adventure each of us started then. :) i have a bye bye poem also....BUT it is MUCH different. it might cause a tear or two in animal-loving fanatics. : ( 36 Bye-bye Jimmy.....[Nature observations; Death; Personal] online 10/29/2012

A lovely poem. I remember well having to take my first son to pre-school. It was heartbreaking to see his little sobbing face as I left him there. I'm welling up now.
