মেষ পালক

কতই-না মধুময় মেষ পালকের মিষ্টান্ন ভাগ্য!
সকাল থেকে সন্ধ্যা অবধি তার ছোটাছুটি;
সারাদিন করে সে মেষগুলোর দেখাশোনা,
তার কথাজুড়ে থাকে বন্দনা।

কেননা সে শুনতে পায় মেষশাবকের নিষ্পাপ ডাক,
সে তা-ও শুনে মায়ের মমতাময়ী জবাব;
তাদের বিশ্রামের সময়ও সে কাছে থেকে দেয় পাহারা,
তা জেনেই নির্ভার মেষেরা।


The Shepherd

How sweet is the shepherd's sweet lot!
From the morn to the evening he strays;
He shall follow his sheep all the day,
And his tongue shall be fillèd with praise.

For he hears the lambs' innocent call,
And he hears the ewes' tender reply;
He is watchful while they are in peace,
For they know when their shepherd is nigh.
