This might be the most moving and beautiful poem I've read since some by Ferlinghetti.

there's a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I pour whiskey on him and inhale cigarette smoke and the whores and the bartenders a fine poem indeed. tony

Well, Charles is honest. And good for him he didn’t let the bluebird die. It’s sad when we stifle that which is tender in us for fear of being soft or not cynical enough or not enough of a manly-man. -GK

I was lucky enough to have sung his poems set to music by John Melcher. One can listen to this in Spotify. Charle's dry wit and shocking lines have always fascinated me. He was cult poet of my generation. (Report)

The duality of life is nicely expressed through this poem. In fact, every one of us hides the true emotions of us. This duality may be a tragedy, yet truth of life. So, it always points to the beauty of life. Brilliantly write. Chandan

A great poem from a great poet. How different are people inside and outside. 'but I'm too clever, I only let him out at night sometimes when everybody's asleep. I say, I know that you're there, so don't be sad.'... the poet has understood that the blue bird is eager to come out. Sometimes he gave it a chance at night. So very nice.10++++

We all hide our blue bird, most of the time.

A true poet of the darker songs. It might be that he died because of too many cigarettes and too many whiskey drinks, since his poems are oft melancholic. He deserves to be chosen as Modern Poem Of The Day, my well meant Congratulations to the family of CB.as well in Germany as in the USA. Myriad of 10's for the vote.

Here the blue bird is the mind of the poet and poet is soul himself. Well description has been made starting as...... there's a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I'm too tough for him, I say, stay in there, I'm not going to let anybody see you. Beautiful poem.
