This is a brilliant evocation of sheer terror - when everything that consoles and comforts us is withdrawn and what's left is impossible to process. Actually the tone here is quite impersonal; you create powerful images and let them speak for themselves. By not interjecting any personal feelings yourself, you put the whole weight of this vision of Darkness in the reader - AND BOY YOU'RE GONNA CARRY THAT WEIGHT A LONG LONG TIME! I am strangely moved by this poem.
