Bird 9 - Wood Pecker On My Mango Tree Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Bird 9 - Wood Pecker On My Mango Tree

Rating: 5.0

Woody wood pecker! Peck, peck, peck
What are you doing with your large head and beak?
Willowy, yet strong neck long and protruding,
Whole morning you are busy banging on my
Wishful Mango tree standing solemnly in the yard!

When the spring makes her graceful entry,
Walking like a shy maiden with dreamy eyes,
Wrapped by the morning Sun beams,
Woodworm you search - tap, tap, tap!
With your long, cylindrical, barb-tipped tongue!

When the tree blooms with a beaming smile,
Whiff of an exotic fragrance fills my garden,
Why do you keep ham -hammer - hammering?
Wrenching at my favourite tree with golden flowers,
Withering her bark that has stood the test of time!

Wings strong and rounded, chisel like bill,
With rounded or wedge-shaped tail,
Winged black plumage with exotic colour scheme,
Wearing a pretty laced cap of flamed orange,
Woodpecker O! Sap sucker! You are really clever!

When I hear your dig-dig, dud-dud, thud-thud,
Willfully making holes into its stem and branches,
Wishfully searching for worms and insects, I keep
Wondering how much it must hurt or pain my fruit tree
Wonderful tree that silently bears, beholds -A benefactress!
