Between Stars and Currents: The Yangtze Night
By William He
Upon the clear waves' gentle sway,
Moonlight drifts in a roaming way.
To Holy Mountain's peak,
My soul feels no weakness,
Breathing the clouds, their shadows sleek.
Around towering heights,
Lamia takes flight,
Through winding turns,
Their coil and calm unwind.
Ancient songs lie buried deep,
Gates of three gorges guard a steep sleep,
Till starlight shatters treasures rare.
Who knows how to play,
A melody new and fair.
The sky's tune pulls the cloud-sails high.
In vain I stare too long,
The passage of time folds like delicate paper,
A secret is buried far, deep within the depths.
By chance the globefishes glide,
Following tides, the dark design,
Sighing through the endless march of time, relentless and sure.
When will fall, I pray,
Phoenix plumes from heaven's sway.
But, with care, I see,
Leaves freed by frost's decree now.
Yellow cranes move slow,
Jade rails glow with mermaid's flow,
The willows remain, their branches clasping the walls.
Following the sands wash by,
Rosewood glowing with an ethereal aureate haze,
To defy the unpredictable flux of fortunes is our way.
On autumn's face,
Ice-wheel turns in space,
Turtle-shell cool with timeless grace.
