Beating The Bird

'Red means ripe, ' thinks the blackbird
and pecks the plum.
It isn't and it leaves the pecked plum
on the tree or the ground.

Loathe to give the tree the wrap-around,
I follow
Kumarmani Mahakul's Tip:

pick the raw fruit,
cut it up,
boil it,
strain it,
add sugar, salt
and ground, roasted cumin seeds
to the juice,
fridge it;
drink it,
the severity of a heatwave
to reduce.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
KM's tip was to use raw mangoes (the drink: aam panir.
I'm in a temperate land of stone fruit and grapes
about to experience a heat wave and to test KM's remedy for the first time.
