Autistic Savant Poem by Gio Masserati

Autistic Savant

He was autistically gifted
A Smartie, detailed, particular
Full of perfectionism
We understood him
Went through life never knowing
Life came to a halt
Felt his life a ruse
Confused at his predicament
Truth lay before them
He was autistic
Never knew it
Like a genius, this guy

Now, he's contemplating
What to do?
In life he's accomplished much
To today's realization of standard
And yet, it's all too much
Thinking back at all the struggles
If only did he know
...if only he knew?
Would he have come this far
Been told, he couldn't do...! !
Not going to figure it all out
Right now...why, oh why? , he asks
Today he can never change his past
But for today, just for now
He must decide how to react
For he feels so much
Takes it all in
Just one decision at a time
Right now...requires him
Tomorrow and the future
Will call on him each day
Maybe by then he'll consider
More in-depth and accept
How to be himself, in autism,
And rise above expectations
Of others...
As he's done all his life
For his three kids,
For his four grandkids,
For himself, and for his wife
