As Sweet As Raisins Poem by Freeyad Ibrahim

As Sweet As Raisins

By Freeyad Ibrahim

My mosque is my sweetheart's bed
My dome is my sweetheart's chest
My minaret is my sweetheart's stature
It is my sin if my darling
Could not get up
For the dawn prayer

*
Whenever she departs,
I raise my both hands
High sky
To the swarm of birds:
O the dearest of birds!
Is there any?
Who would lend me its wings
That I might fly
To the one
I impatiently love?
That is why!

*
I like her so much
That she once gave me a slap
Intently yet gently
Teasingly
Gaily she defied
I sent her a verbal kiss
Online
Her slap I denied
Her two eyes welled up
With tender twinkling tears
And her cheeks two embers
Or Red Wine
Like late twin August pears
With her long eyelids
on Mine
Conscience stings
I went to her almost flying
With no wings
Bowed and said in her ears
Like a teenager's sighs
for unanswered tries:
Haven't you heard
The saying of the wise?
‘That a slap
of the sweetheart
is as sweet as
Raisins.'
So be happy
Don't worry
And be wise
Sweetness from sweet hearts
Arise….
