As I sat alone... A typical Walt Whitman piece, a long poem that still retains its grip till the end.

The essence of Whitman is contained in these lines: I will confront these shows of the day and night! / I will know if I am to be less than they! / I will see if I am not as majestic as they! / I will see if I am not as subtle and real as they! / I will see if I am to be less generous than they!

Whitman calls on poets of America, of democracy, poets everywhere to 'tally the ocean's roar and the eagle's scream', and not to be gnats and dots. It is a long and patriotic poem.

RESPONSE NUMBER ONE: ONE MY COMMENT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF, but Here first I cite WW: A Nation announcing itself, I myself make the only growth by which I can be appreciated,10 I reject none, accept all, then reproduce all in my own forms. A breed whose proof is in time and deeds; What we are, we are- nativity is answer enough to objections; We wield ourselves as a weapon is wielded, We are powerful and tremendous in ourselves, please be continued.....
