Answer Your Inner Self Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Answer Your Inner Self

Rating: 5.0

‘I don't want to
Be a mother now'
You said.

‘Why me alone? '
complained you,
‘He who slept with me
Has me forgotten for ever
The moment he left my bed.
Why should I carry
The burden for ten months
And then lifelong?
Why do your laws
Constrict my rights?
Do I have no rights?
It is my body, my life,
My ambitions, after all.
Who are you
To say "No"?
When you speak
About owning up
The responsibility
Of my acts,
Why do you not
Speak of his? '

All this is true.
But, Nature's Laws are
Discriminatory too.

It is easy for me to say,
Motherhood is a boon
Nature (if you believe in God, He)
Has bestowed on you.

It is easy for me to say,
Every boon comes
With a price-tag.

It is easy for me to
preach on the rights of
Your unborn baby.

But doesn't
Your inner self
Remind you
Repeatedly
That I am true, too?

I see (in my search) that 'boon' may be an adjective. As a noun it means: 'The meaning of BOON is a timely benefit: blessing.'...and it MAY have a 'price-tag' for sure. I say not always.

Wow! That is wonderful, Bri. "Boon" is a word I had studied (because English is not my mother tongue) while at school. I didn't consult a dictionary while using the word in the poem. My fault. (Smiles) …

The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the "Abortion Rights", rescinding on the landmark decision of 1973, in the case of Roe v. Wade.

Poet Menon, you've done an absolutely brilliant job with this poem. The subject matter is so sensitive and so timely. And so very personal. A very well thought out poem. Brilliantly presented.

Thank you Richard. I do believe seriously that 'planned parenthood' is the solution, now that we have any number birth control devises & medicines to choose from.

But, Gods, and of course Nature, are discriminating. The burden of pregnancy and motherhood lies solely with the female. Other animals do not complain, so we think. But humans?

I urge either 'parent' to seek counseling regarding topics such as abortion and suicide. Planned Parenthood may help some people decide the 'right course' for them.

True Bri, But people object that "the right course" suggested by you should not impede their "right to intercourse". Hope you understand,
