An Outcast Poem by Mahlubandile Phillips

An Outcast

The boy grew up in
a society where
kindness is taken
for weakness

So long he grew once
at home screams of
women echoes thundering
his heart

As a result he grew to see
the world different
abandoned by community
forsaken by friends

He vowed not to believe again
to swallow he's emotions
not love, he grew up hating
Yes to protect his heart he,
turned to to dark

In the basement there he lies
at night he crys
school life he became a victim
because of that heart
No matter how hard he tried
to hide

Hight school to pretend to be
someone he's not, provide
safety, characters each day he played
a friend a bullie a nerd most
of all a loner

He'd laugh smile and spawn lies
then he forgot who he was

To look in the mirror
a dark skinned monkey
that's how they teased him

One day a girl was sick in
class he stood up and embraced
his heart to assist by walking
her home

Along the journey he gained
a friend whom changed
his mindset with her
he now can be himself be
different laugh smile and dance
with and bring the goodness he's
kept inside

He realized all he wanted and
dreamed of was having a
friend to share, care and cry with

However he fell in love not
used to being loved he lost
her too now heavy
rains now resume.
