An Elegy For My Niece Poem by Kishore Kumar Das

An Elegy For My Niece

Your moon-like face
beaming with smile
two little eyes
filled with aura of inquisitiveness
classic laughter
fastened everybody with joy
no sign of intimation
that you were unhappy
the 'zero' hidden in your laughter
remained a mystery
you welcomed the devouring fire
with jets of laughter
an incarnation of patience
inexpressible
an epitome of affection
inexplicable
perhaps as per His direction
affection converted into pain....
and you drank
that poison like pain
the full stop in your life
raised so many questionnaire
stillness, the only answer
your childhood call of 'uncle'
still an echo for me
you, an embodiment
of simplicity and innocence
still fresh in my mind
you, an evergreen forest
still dancing in my eyes
your noble endeavour
for higher education
the hot summer days
the torrential rain
could not dampen your enthusiasm
you remained victorious
for a limited period?
today you proved
life is a big 'zero'
you were a white lotus
you departed as Goddess Lakshmi
your life full of sacrifice
a perennial experience for us
you were transformed into
the glittering Mercury planet
at least for me.
