Poetry is a vast subject that gives us freedom to express our innermost emotions, experiences and perceived truths, one can't say one form is better than the other and yet you're right that poetry is not combinations of words and something to play with, it comes from the core of one's heart and touches the others in a most astounding way. It's more a message from within to the outer, just to end up where it belomgs, i.e the inner. Good poetry survives while the bad one disappears in the gutter of time, so don't pay much attention to those friends who are here to have a good time, let them enjoy, who knows something good may find its way ito them as well.
