America's Colored Backbone Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

America's Colored Backbone

More are getting the time,
And opportunity to witness...
Mostly to disbelieve.
The true color of America's backbone,
Is much more diverse.
Than those calling what is 'faked',
Has been a reality kept deceived.

Called 'minorities'.
The ones depended upon,
To support a greeding of feasted...
Deluded beliefs.
Called 'minorities',
Are the ones...
Used to prepare their food to eat.
And abused to amuse insecurities they keep.

More are getting the time,
And opportunities to witness...
Not the homeless.
Or those historically depicted,
As the unfortunate poor begging.
In food lines to see,
Are those driving up in luxury cars.
Painfully explaining,
How embarrassing for them...
The experience of reality can be.

If not for a threatening pandemic,
No one would see on TV...
Those quick to protest.
And whine about entitlements,
Few have earned to get.
None of this would be publicly addressed.
Or give it time for many to think,
The strength of America's backbone...
Has nothing to do with munching on crumpets.
Or the charading of pretensions.
Marketed to give an image,
In reality does not exist.
