Alone — yet infused in every existence, pure,
As if awakened anew in an icy, ruthless chalice,
A mountain stream bursts forth —
Splitting rocks, grinding against stones,
Flowing to its own melody,
Singing hymns of silence,
Moving toward its eternal home — the ocean —
To stand at the threshold of time,
And dissolve into a million voices.
Awake —
Not like the restless eyes of the Companions of the Cave,
That opened for a fleeting moment,
Then sank again into the cavern of sleep;
But as from the infinite silence of nothingness,
Emerging and submerging in circles of light —
A tear dropped — and shimmered.
Aware —
As in that fiery instant of Balā (Yes!) ,
When the soul touched its Beloved,
When the question resounded: Alastu bi-rabbikum? —
Am I not your Lord?
And the answer was not a whisper,
But the first and final truth,
That permeated the heart of every particle.
Elated —
Like an embryo in the mother's womb,
Holding an entire universe within;
Or like the kangaroo mother
Who keeps her young hidden in her warm pouch —
Enfolded within herself, united with herself,
A perfect circle.
Alone —
Yet this solitude is strange:
I am alone, yet infused in every existence.
I am self-existent — without cause or end.
I am in the heart, and beyond every heart.
I am the atmosphere, the particle, beyond direction.
I am the origin of my own creation,
And the light of its manifestation.
By crafting this beautiful possibility,
I awakened the sensation of my own being.
In the void — I am.
In every movement of the universe — I am.
My existence expands,
Gathering all of being into its embrace.
Whatever is inscribed upon the parchment of the cosmos —
Be it a spectral wave,
The smile of the wind,
Or the fierce dance of the storm —
All exists by my breath.
I speak that truth
Which only the knowing can understand.
I am no deprived dweller,
Nor Adam cast out of Paradise,
Nor a prison of flesh and skin.
I am not a thing, nor a name, nor a word —
I am the eye, the listening ear,
The consciousness of light.
Without head or foot — I see, I feel.
