A fantastically accomplished poem in form. The message is deep, resonant - and admirable. A multi-layered wonder of a poem - passionate as the dying-and reviving myth of Adonis/Osiris/Christ. Men worship the goddess, then defile her. At their peril. Baucis and Philemon, being old, were allowed to live together by a merciful god who recognised their sweet, eternal love - and enjoyed their hospitality. They grew together as entwined trees.
