Have you been lost in darkness
yet find the light in you
have you burn yourself in hell
yet let it steal not the heaven in you
Have you merry with sinners
and yet preserve your righteousness
Have you dined on a bitter table
but somewhere there finds sweetness
Have you felt all the pains you could
but never be deprived of pleasures
Have you had no earthly gold nor silver
yet wealthy in heavenly possessions
Have you been in that noisy moment of greed
yet hearken to the low whispers of contention
Have you justified your silly mistakes
yet know within you, your corrections
Have you been that beggar at dawn
whom at noon have more to give
Have you been through all this my friend
then you've been all that man could be
